Water has a higher thermal conductivity than air – it can move heat faster than air. Water also has a higher specific heat capacity. It can absorb more heat before it feels warm.

There are two reasons a gaming PC needs the increased thermal conductivity and heat capacity of water:

  • Its components produce more heat than the air around them can absorb
  • The installed fans are making too much noise or using too much power to cool the components

  1. The components in your build require more cooling than an air cooler can provide

A water cooling system for a PC works similarly to a car cooling system. Both use a basic principle of thermodynamics :

  • Heat moves from warmer to colder objects
  • As the cooler object gets warmer, the warmer object gets cooler

You can experience this principle up close by placing your hand flat on a cool spot on your desk for a few seconds. When you raise your hand, your palm becomes a little cooler, the place where your hand was, becomes a little warmer.

PC water cooling’s sole purpose is to release heat (energy) from critical computer components to the environment as quickly and effectively as possible by dissipating the heat through the radiators.

The water cooling process in detail

How exactly does the PC water cooling work now? First, let’s look at the components of the cooling system:

  • A pump that moves coolant through the system
  • A radiator that releases heat into the air
  • A fan that blows air over the radiator
  • A coolant reservoir that holds additional liquid and allows coolant to be easily added
  • Hoses that connect the different parts of the system

  1. The coolant is poured into a reservoir or container (also Reservoirs called), connected with a pump unit. The water tank level must be checked and topped up from time to time as the water evaporates due to the heat. It is advisable to empty and clean the whole thing every six months.
  2. The pump then moves fluid through a network of pipes or hoses to a highly conductive metal block, usually copper or aluminum. This block has a finely milled side that attaches to the CPU’s top (or GPU). This water block usually has narrow channels through which the water flows and absorbs heat from the remaining material. Thermal paste between the chip and the block improves the heat transfer between the two surfaces. The chip heats the block, and the water absorbs the heat as it flows through all the channels.
  3. The water then leaves the CPU block on its way to a radiator cooler.
  4. At the cooler, the water is pushed through a network of even narrower channels.
  5. These ducts are cooled by a fan (or several)  using an air blower.
  6. The water then flows back into the water tank and begins its journey again

What do I need for a PC water cooling

We have already mentioned the components of a water cooling system above. Here we want to explain this to you in more detail. For a simpler and uniform illustration, we use product examples for custom Waküs from the manufacturer EKWB.

The pump is one of the most important parts of the circuit. The strength of the pump determines how fast the coolant moves through the pipes and blocks. If the water moves too fast, it doesn’t have enough time to absorb heat. If it moves too slowly, too much heat can build up around sensitive components. The complexity of the system affects the overall flow rate. The more resistance the liquid has in the blocks and the cooler, the slower the overall flow rate.

The pump must also be powerful enough to move the liquid from the lowest point in the system to the highest. This is known as head pressure or vertical pressure and is especially important when very tall enclosures are being cooled with water cooling.

The main function of the radiator is to cool the liquid flowing in the circuit. As the liquid flows through a copper pipe, the cooler fins absorb the heat from the water. The fins are then cooled by the fans attached to the radiator.

The radiator fans should generate enough static pressure (ideally at low speed) and be matched to the radiator type. With AiO water coolers you don’t have to worry about that. However, if you want to build a custom wakü, then be particularly fussy when choosing the radiator fan.

Cooling blocks (also called water blocks) are used to transfer heat from the source (most commonly the CPU) into the liquid flowing through the water block. Micro fins that improve the cooling surface and channel design make the water block a crucial part of the cycle. This also enables the highest overclocks.

The cooling block is mounted directly on the CPU and absorbs the emitted heat. Caution: The cooling block only cools the processor, not the voltage converter. Therefore, you have to ensure that your housing is well ventilated.

A reservoir (also: expansion tank or cooling tank) is supposed to keep adding water in a circuit so that air bubbles can be slowly replaced by circulating water.

It also serves as a filling point for liquid coolant. Reservoirs can be stand-alone units or, on smaller models, supplied as a pump and reservoir combination. Without an expansion tank, the water cooling system would burst. 

This can be used to vent the circuit if necessary. The reservoir is extremely popular with case modders, as you can put an individual note on your own WaKü.

Hoses connect every component in the circuit. Logically, the size of the hose must match the size of the connections and vice versa.

Each tube or hose element is marked with two numbers, the smaller number being the inside diameter and the larger number being the outside diameter. Thicker hoses usually do not offer a better flow rate. Rubber hoses offer greater durability and are less flexible, which prevents kinks.

There are also rigid, hard pipes for the professionals among the case modders, which means that the water cycle can be designed very individually.

Special connecting parts are used to connect and fix pipes or hoses to other components in the cooling circuit.

There are numerous sizes and shapes and a distinction between connections for soft and hard hoses. You always need two connections for each component of the water cooling.

Screw connections offer greater reliability than quick-release fasteners. The circuit should be tight and without leaks.

The final component of a PC water cooling system is the liquid itself. Many use distilled water for this, as tap water contains impurities that can clog the channels in the water blocks and cooler, or make the hoses cloudy.

Special additives can even add colour to the liquid to make it look even more appealing. Also, certain coolant additives can lower the water’s surface tension, making it a more effective coolant. Finally, some additives have antimicrobial or corrosion-inhibiting components that can extend the water cooling system (keyword: rust protection and algae prevention).
